Success Stories

Our rural communities are innovative, collaborative and resourceful when it comes to helping each other raise money – and our communities are engaged in a lot of fundraising! We can learn from each other, share our experiences, provide advice and support because that is what rural communities are about – working together.

This project is inspired by the Foundation for Rural Living’s Rural Philanthropy Resource Network, Awards of Rural Excellence and the many community projects that have been made possible through the commitment of rural communities to act on a vision of a better Rural Ontario.

Sustaining rural capacity means investing in the development of rural philanthropy but often it means simply raising the funds needed to stock the library with books, provide transportation or recreational opportunities for youth or to clean the local river. Even very small communities can raise large sums of money for big projects. The Oil Heritage District Community Centre Association raised $1.7 million in public fundraising toward a $7.6 million multi-use community centre in Petrolia for the residents of rural Central Lambton. Along with $4.5 million dollars they secured in government funding a 20 year dream of building the facility was finally achieved by the people in this community.

This collection of ‘Success Stories from the Field” is meant to provide you with examples of successful rural fundraising efforts, as well as inspiration from people like you who provide the imagination and hard work to overcome the challenges that raising money can bring.

If you miss the current features, you are able to view our “past features.”  If you wish to share your success story don’t hesitate to use the following form to contact a Communications Coordinator or e-mail communications@ruralphilanthropy.ca.  We would be pleased to share your success with others.

 Ignatius Jesuit Centre
 3/5/2007
During the fall, the Foundation for Rural Living was invited on a tour of the Ignatius Jesuit Centre (IJC) here in Guelph. Several of us had never been to the grounds before, nor did we realize what it had to offer. It opened our eyes to see what is available right under our noses. From this article you will discover some of the history as well as some of the fascinating projects taking place

United Way of Sault Ste. Marie Starlight Film Festival
 2/6/2007
For the past 5 years, the United Way of Sault Ste. Marie, located in Northern Ontario has hosted their Starlight Film Festival. This fundraiser is a huge success because students from local high school support their community and enjoy a night filled with movies, popcorn and pop. A lot of planning and preparation goes into Starlight, but it is well worth it to see smiles on teens faces and money being raised to support local organizations
